On March 5th, the Lake Superior Art Association presented a celebration of the History of Arts and Culture in Marquette. Jack Deo and Ann Hilton Fisher shared a lot of fun and interesting stories about Anita Meyland, who came to Marquette as a young bride 100 years ago and began organizing many events and founded Art On the Rocks. Explorers and Artists: The Group of Seven

It was standing room only for Lynn Buckland-Brown's LSAA presentation this past Tuesday! It was standing room only for Lynn Buckland-Brown's LSAA presentation this past Tuesday. Her topic: Explorers and Artists: The Group of Seven drew community and LSAA members who were interested in learning more about a unique style of wilderness landscape painting developed by a group of Canadian artists in the early part of the last century. Who are These Guys?? The Group of Seven, once known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933. These artists were committed to exploring, through art, the unique character of the Canadian landscape. Collectively they agreed: Canada’s rugged wilderness regions needed to be recorded in a distinctive painting style. This style would break from European tradition and reflect an increasingly nationalistic sentiment and initiated the first major Canadian national art movement.
