LSAA Art Talk: An Evening with Artist John French

On October 15th, 35 fellow artists, friends, and art lovers joined local artist John French for an evening chat as he demonstrated his techniques for painting water, rocks, foliage, and the Lake Superior landscape. While John painted, he discussed the materials he prefers, and methods he's developed. He reflected on his sources of inspiration and love of the Lake Superior Region, touching on the geography and history of the region. Seven Grandfather Teachings unveiling

Presented by City of Marquette Office of Arts & Culture at Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park, Marquette MI Seven Grandfather Teachings Sculpture Unveiling Event The City of Marquette announces the installation of the 'Seven Grandfather Teachings' sculpture by artist Jason Quigno to occur Friday, September 6th.  The sculpture has been commissioned by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission. Quigno, an Anishinaabe contemporary stone sculptor and tribal citizen of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, has carved seven locally quarried boulders to represent each of the Seven Grandfathers and the cultural wisdom they embody. Dog Dayz of Winter Youth Art Show

The artwork boasts the honest simplicity of children’s art, guided by their teachers. A reception held for The annual Dog Dayz of Winter Art Show. The reception was open to the public, the artists and their families on Saturday, February 17. There are some fantastic new ideas this year, so please stop by to see their work! Explorers and Artists: The Group of Seven

It was standing room only for Lynn Buckland-Brown's LSAA presentation this past Tuesday! It was standing room only for Lynn Buckland-Brown's LSAA presentation this past Tuesday. Her topic: Explorers and Artists: The Group of Seven drew community and LSAA members who were interested in learning more about a unique style of wilderness landscape painting developed by a group of Canadian artists in the early part of the last century. Lynn showed an inspiring  documentary that traced the route of these artists through some breathtaking scenery.  See "Painted Land: In Search of the Group of Seven" trailer below!

Fresh Coast Plein Air Painting Festival Results and Photos

The 6th annual Fresh Coast Plein Air Festival was held on Friday and Saturday, June 23rd and 24th in Marquette, MI. The event attracted the most artists ever with 38 participants! The festival has been part of the “Grand Finale” of the City of Marquette Art Week, a week-long celebration of Marquette's creative community held during the last full week of June. This year's judging, reception, presentation of awards, and artwork display was held at Provisions MQT, one of Marquette’s newest coffeehouses on the shore of lake Superior.
