EMILY WEDDLE & MEREDITH WEDDLE D’AMORE

As artists, mothers, and identical twin sisters living parallel lives, we are continuously exploring ways to engage creatively with our roles as caregivers, deepening a sense of self and our connection with our children. This work considers themes of repetition and identity, domestic and emotional labor, and notions of work and play. Separated by nearly a thousand miles of geographical distance, yet tethered by a drive for near-constant collaboration, we have brought our work together for this exhibition to uncover the ways in which our individual creative practices relate to one another through thematic intersections and conceptual exploration. Second Nature celebrates the ways in which artmaking and motherhood are intertwined in our daily lives It also acknowledges the pendulum swing of productivity in various realms of responsibility.
“Second Nature” explores how we have supported each other as artists and collaborators when aspects of lives have slipped into asynchronous planes our of making/doing/being. Frequently working alongside her children, Emily’s artwork and durational projects seek to approach mundane experiences and domestic tasks with humor and levity while connecting with deeper themes such as the passage of time. Meredith’s mixed media works emerged from her printmaking practice and experiment with the ideas of repetition and iteration that are inherent to the medium. Together our works seek to deepen our connection to our children and our children’s worlds and interests as they evolve and unfold over time, while affording us opportunities for creative discovery. Second Nature celebrates the ways in which artmaking and motherhood can be experienced as two sides of the same reality.
