Becoming Made; How an Artist Makes… and is Made

As part of Art Week, the Lake Superior Art Association is showing the film “Becoming Made” at the Peter White Library in the Shiras room at 3:00 Monday June 24.

Becoming Made: a rare look at how an artist makes and is made by her environment and her art

Mary Brodbeck’s film shows in elegant detail the process of creating Mokuhanga woodblock prints in the traditional Japanese method.

In this award-winning 2014 short film, Michigan-based artist Mary Brodbeck turns the camera on her own work in creating woodblock prints. Inspired by the great masters Hiroshige and Hokusai, Brodbeck moves in a community of like-minded Western and Japanese creative artists who are eager to keep this ancient practice alive and relevant.

Admission is free.
