Arty Fashion Show of Upcycled Fabrics with JoAnn Shelby

Tuesday April 15 7:00 in the PWPL Community Room

If fashion is your passion, join us for an Arty Fashion Show of Upcycled Fabrics with designer, JoAnn Shelby.

The fashion industry is considered a significant polluter, contributing a substantial amount of greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and textile waste. Luckily thrifting and upcycling is becoming the cool thing, as is the trend to “slow” fashion. JoAnn’s focus is on ecological fashion, creative reuse, and artistic detailing. The evening begins with models on the runway. Then enjoy a demonstration of tips and techniques that remake cast offs into couture.

This free event, hosted by the Lake Superior Art Association, is open to the public. Tuesday, April 15 7:00-8:00pm in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

JoAnn’s Artist Statement

As a child I was always drawing, cutting up whatever was handy to make my creations. Mother was skilled in needle arts, so I got my love of fiber from her. Art major at Michigan State University, studies focused on fine art and clothing design, and worked in gallery after studies, selling in art fairs. I relocated to Marquette in late 1976 from Ann Arbor. While my 3 sons were young, I returned to school to become a surgical technologist. Sadly, art went to back burner on simmer, 22 years later, back to being a full-time artist. I exhibit in regional art fairs and several galleries.
I use several different surface deign techniques to upcycle sustainable sourced clothing and fabric. With goal of keeping those out of our landfills and making the garment re-loved. Living in Upper Peninsula of Michigan provides unlimited inspiration. I see great Lake Superior from studio window, deep woods beckon exploration. I don’t try to make photographic representation, rather try to convey feeling I get from scene.
